A Guide to Caring for & Enjoying Houghton Lake

Houghton Lake is a treasure, a place where memories are made, and nature thrives. Whether you're a long-time resident, a seasonal cabin owner, or a first-time visitor, we all share a responsibility to protect this beautiful resource for generations to come. Here's a guide on how we can all be good stewards of Houghton Lake.

Keeping Our Waters Clean: Preventing Pollution

The health of Houghton Lake starts on its shores. What we do on land directly impacts the water.

  • Septic System Maintenance: If you live on the lake, regular inspection and pumping of your septic system are crucial. Leaky systems can introduce harmful bacteria and nutrients into the lake, contributing to algae blooms.
  • Proper Waste Disposal: Never dispose of chemicals, oil, paint, or other hazardous materials down drains or on the ground. These can easily leach into the groundwater and, eventually, the lake. Utilize local recycling and waste disposal programs for these items.
  • Fertilizer and Pesticide Use: Be mindful of what you're putting on your lawn. Excess fertilizers can run off into the lake, fueling weed and algae growth. Consider using phosphorus-free fertilizers or exploring natural alternatives.
  • Pet Waste: Always pick up after your pets. Pet waste contains bacteria that can contaminate the water, making it unsafe for swimming.
  • Plastic Pollution: Be especially mindful of plastic items, such as bottles, bags, and food wrappers. Plastics never truly disappear; they break down into tiny, toxic microplastics that can be ingested by wildlife and contaminate our water.
  • Cigarette Butts: Cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of litter. They are not biodegradable and contain harmful chemicals that can leach into the water. Always dispose of them properly in a trash receptacle.

Staying Safe on the Lake

Houghton Lake is a place for fun, but safety should always come first.

  • Life Jackets Save Lives: Ensure everyone on your boat, especially children, is wearing a properly fitted life jacket. The unexpected can happen quickly on the water.
  • Know the Weather: Houghton Lake can get choppy with strong winds. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared to cut your trip short if conditions change.
  • No Drinking and Boating: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and dangerous. It impairs judgment and reaction time, putting everyone at risk.

By working together, we can ensure that Houghton Lake remains a beautiful and safe destination for everyone. Let's all do our part to preserve this natural wonder.

Where to Find a Life Jacket

If you don't own a life jacket, don't worry! There are resources to help. While every vessel needs a life jacket for each person on board, you can often borrow them for the day.

  • Life Jacket Loaner Stations: A "Float Safe Station" is available at the Gerrish Township Marina and Carlos Park on Higgins Lake. This program, a partnership with Gerrish Township and C.O.O.R. Great Start Family Liaison, provides life jackets in a variety of sizes for free use.
  •  Check with local authorities: Contact the Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce, the local DNR office, or the Roscommon County Sheriff's Office to inquire about any life jacket loaner programs or giveaway events in the area.

Navigating the Water

Following the rules isn't just about avoiding a ticket; it's about ensuring everyone's safety and enjoyment.

  • Boating Safety: Familiarize yourself with all state and local boating laws. This includes speed limits, "no wake" zones near the shore and marinas, and having the proper safety equipment on board, such as life jackets for everyone.
